DIGITALIZING THE DEMOLITION SECTOR

INTERFACE

OUR TECHNOLOGY

BUILDING INSPECTION
Our goal is to create a more accurate and reliable material report by digitizing the demolition site. We bring drones that capture images of the field as a first step of the process.

GEOMETRIC
RECONSTRUCTION
Using the data captured by the drone a 3D textured reconstruction of the field is done. This model is then segmented by plane and shape detection to identify the different elements that conform the building. Finally using the elements detected we extract their geometry.

CLASSIFICATION
LOCALIZATION
PLANNING
INTERFACE
Imagery from the inspection is analyzed to locate our chosen material. The system uses a detect and describe model to classify small areas of the building elements by their shape and texture. From there we combine these classifications into 2D and 3D mapping of the materials in our model.
The information collected in the previous steps is processed and displayed in a user interface. This planning environment that we have created aims to provide a better source of the materials available in the city as well as a tool that coordinates the demolition process.
OUR VISION
The production of materials needed to satisfy the demand for new architectures generates a great impact on our environment. Meanwhile, every year resources are lost during building demolitions. Almost thirty percent of the waste generated in the European Union comes from the construction industry.

The term urban mining is born from the perspective of environmental concerns and aims for more efficient use of the construction materials available in the shape of building stock. The purpose is to reduce the use of virgin sources, generating savings through improving secondary resource use and lowering the negative environmental impacts.

The sifting of buildings to obtain material is something that has recurrently happened in history but the tools used to perform these tasks haven’t evolved. At SIFTSITE we are developing a new workflow to sort and locate material from pre-demolition sites to create a more reliable report of the resources available.
